The U.S. Weather and Oceanography Agency, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), is relying on collaboration between manned and unmanned systems to modernize its fleet. Up to eight Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) from the Lafayette, Louisiana-based company Chance Maritime Technologies (CMT) will support the survey ships „Surveyor“ and „Navigator“, which are currently under construction. The contract for CMT has a total value of 21.6 million US-Dollar.

Coordinated operations of multiple uncrewed systems (UxS), or the cooperative interaction of manned and unmanned systems, are developments that hold great promise for military, scientific, and business applications. To enhance the efficiency of data collection and support the safe passage of goods in U.S. ports, NOAA has now awarded a multi-million dollar contract to Chance Maritime Technologies. Up to eight of the approximately 9-meter-long Chance LR30 Uncrewed Surface Vessels are to be delivered to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration over the next five years.

    Technical excellence and modular flexibility

The USV is powered by a diesel engine and is equipped with an active gyro stabilizer, ensuring seaworthiness even under challenging conditions. A climate-controlled payload space with standardized provisions and power supply for various payloads, along with deck rails and a sloped stern with winches, allows for rapid adaptation to different mission profiles. The Chance LR30 USV can also be transported overland and launched from standard boat ramps. Alternatively, the water drone can be deployed via a crane from the manned „mother ship“ for situational and targeted use when specific capabilities are required.
