Saab Unveils Unmanned Combat System of the Future
At the Swedish Armed Forces’ anniversary air show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping, Saab unveiled a full-scale concept model of an unmanned combat aircraft. The system, designated A3-001, illustrates the vision of integrated air warfare in which manned and unmanned platforms operate as a unified system. The model offers a glimpse into the technological developments that could complement the capabilities of the Gripen fleet in the future.
The A3-001 is designed for deployment in heavily contested airspace. Its intended mission areas include electronic warfare, the suppression of enemy air defense systems, and precision strike operations. To succeed in these demanding scenarios, the design emphasizes a low radar signature, a high degree of autonomy, and the capability for cross-domain operations.
Technological Development Through 2030
Peter Nilsson, head of Saab’s Advanced Programs business unit, highlights the current development phase: “We are in an intensive phase in which we are collaborating with Sweden to explore technologies that will form the foundation for the next generation of combat aircraft systems.” The company plans to fly unmanned demonstrators with fighter-jet-like capabilities before 2030. The A3 system represents a standalone concept that could be considered for the period starting in the mid-2030s, provided Sweden decides to expand its capabilities accordingly.

The unveiling of the A3-001 underscores the global trend toward so-called “system-of-systems” approaches, in which unmanned platforms are no longer viewed as isolated tools but as an integral part of manned combat formations. At the same time, the project highlights the growing importance of stealth capabilities and electronic resilience in unmanned systems. Manufacturers capable of combining these requirements with the necessary interoperability with manned aviation are positioning themselves as key players in the defense strategies of the coming decades. Saab is leveraging its many years of experience in developing the Gripen platform to accelerate the transition from traditional aviation to hybrid, unmanned systems.
