„Home win“ at the XPO+ Launcher challenge

In the end, there could only be one winner, but ultimately, everyone emerged victorious. While the AG3 Labs team celebrated their „home win“ at the XPO+ Launcher competition at XPONENTIAL in Detroit, all the other participating startups gained a wealth of experience and valuable feedback from a highly distinguished jury. This insight might ultimately prove to be far more valuable than just a place on the XPO+ podium.
To thrive in the competitive market for unmanned systems, it’s essential to have a good product. But that alone is not enough. To stand out in the competition for clients and impress investors, one must demonstrate sales talent, especially in self-presentation. In the end, it is not necessarily the best product or service that prevails. Investors often prefer to invest in entrepreneurs rather than in drones, software, or services.

In an insightful panel discussion, the jury provided insights on what to consider during a business pitch
The five jurors shared key dos and don’ts to be mindful of during a pitch and what investors and even consultants from banks focus on when it comes to a business pitch. For instance, realism is always better than embellishment and exaggeration. It’s crucial to have all important operational data and figures at hand to respond confidently to inquiries. Additionally, one should invest time and effort into preparing a pitch, both in terms of the materials and the presentation itself. A confident, clear, and structured appearance can make it easier to persuade as a person, which is a significant factor in pitching.

Selling oneself and one’s company in three minutes is a real challenge that deserves time and effort
During the subsequent pitch round, the participating companies had three minutes each to introduce themselves and their products. While the individual business models were certainly exciting and generally convincing, the differences in the quality of the brief presentations quickly became apparent. Nevertheless, the jurors had a challenging task in selecting the top three. In the end, a local favorite emerged victorious: AG3 Labs, based in Milford, Michigan, a small community just outside Detroit. WayWave from Arlington, Virginia, secured second place, and startup Flox Intelligence from Syracuse, New York, completed the all-American podium in third place.
