Expansion of National Manufacturing Capacities

With a conditional loan of up to $820 million, the Pentagon is supporting the defense tech company Performance Drone Works in building manufacturing capacities for drone components. This demonstrates the US government’s clear commitment to sustainably strengthening the domestic UxS industry. The declared goal is to become independent from foreign-controlled supply chains in the long term.

Modern conflicts clearly show that industrial capacities cannot be ramped up overnight in times of crisis. This is an issue recognized not only in the US but also elsewhere. While Europe often struggles to send clear signals regarding state financing for unmanned systems, the US government is fully committing to this effort. A symbol of a radical shift in drone policy is the Executive Order 14307 (“Unleashing American Drone Dominance”) signed by President Donald Trump.

Up to $1 billion is to be allocated, for example, for the purchase of smaller drones, with 19 companies soon to compete for the favor of the US military in the second stage of the very practical selection process for the “Drone Dominance Program” in Fort Carson, Colorado.

Competitive Technology from Domestic Production

However, the promotion is not only aimed at developing competitive technologies but also at establishing the necessary manufacturing capacities. The “Department of War”, led by Secretary Pete Hegseth, plans to support this significantly with financial aid. It was recently announced that Performance Drone Works, based in Huntsville, Alabama, has received a conditional loan commitment of $820 million from the Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) at the Pentagon.

PDW Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Performance Drone Works, already consolidates development, flight testing, system integration, and series production under one roof. The existing headquarters, the approximately 8,350 square meter Drone Factory 01, serves as a starting point for the upcoming scaling. The focus is on domestic production of critical core components that have so far had to be imported predominantly from abroad, such as motors, controllers, and batteries, as well as specialized sensors and camera technology.
