For those who do not want to rely on guesses, theories, or the famous gut feeling, numbers, data, and facts are essential. Since 2018, the market analysis company Drone Industry Insights has been collecting just that, with what it claims is the world’s largest data collection, and makes some of the key findings available in a free whitepaper (Global State of Drones). The current Global Drone Survey 2026 runs until the end of July.

Approximately 1,000 participants from more than 70 countries. This is the database that the market analysts led by founders Kay Wackwitz and Hendrik Bödecker can use for an inventory of the global UAS industry. In this way, they provide valuable insights into the state of the global drone economy.

Decision-making aid for investments and partnerships

Until 2023, the eagerly awaited whitepaper was titled „Drone Industry Barometer“. This was quite an appropriate name, as the regular survey of the international industry not only yields numbers on the current state of the sector but also enables the derivation of developments and the identification of trends. As a result, many market participants use it not just as a status report but also to make forecasts. In this way, the publication, now renamed „Global State of Drones“, often serves as a decision-making aid regarding investments, strategic partnerships, or general business development.

„The Global Drone Survey is one of the most valuable things we provide to the industry“, says Kay Wackwitz. „Not because of what we publish, but because of what it communicates to the industry. After eight years, the data has become a reference point that decision-makers, investors, and political actors worldwide rely on.”

New opportunity to better understand the market

In parallel with the global market survey, Drone Industry Insights is also launching a new project. With ASTRA Intelligence, the Hamburg-based company has set up a B2B platform where businesses can present themselves and potential customers can specifically search for providers, service providers, and possible partners. Extensive search options will enable tailored inquiries, and specially developed AI algorithms will provide optimal support in the search and help highlight current trends and future opportunities. In this way, alongside an attractive „matchmaking platform“, a further opportunity to understand the unmanned aerial systems market better is created. „This year we are combining the survey with ASTRA – because the industry needs an overview not just once a year. It needs a continuous knowledge advantage every day“, knows Kay Wackwitz.
