Pivotal moment

With the introduction of mass production for cars, an important chapter in automotive history was written in Detroit. Therefore, the location for XPONENTIAL 2026 could hardly be more fitting. The question of how to transition from single-unit to series production and from pilot projects to regular operations is crucial for the future of the global UxS industry. The most important trade fair for uncrewed systems and robotics in North America aims to provide answers from May 11th to 14th in „Motor City“.
Whether the much-cited „Motor City“ will actually become „Drone City“ in retrospect remains to be seen. However, the event, organized by the AUVSI (Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International) and Messe Düsseldorf North America (MDNA), is taking place at a time that presents both opportunities and risks for the UxS industry. It is, therefore, all the more important to seek exchange, common ground, and the potential for collaborations during such a crucial phase. „The future of robotics and autonomous systems will be shaped by public trust, safety, and the ability to scale responsibly“, states Michael Robbins, President and CEO of AUVSI, setting the direction before the first XPONENTIAL in his hometown. „XPONENTIAL 2026 brings the global autonomy ecosystem to Detroit at a pivotal moment. With its leadership in building, testing, and deploying complex systems at scale, Detroit is the ideal place for the industry to tackle adoption and integration challenges together.”
Successful structural change
After Detroit’s shine as a major industrial metropolis had somewhat faded and structural change took time, the US city has now transformed into an important center for the UxS industry. In addition to industrial manufacturing capabilities and a significant defense industry – particularly in the field of armored ground vehicles – a growing autonomous driving ecosystem has emerged. Furthermore, the metropolitan area offers diverse deployment options for unmanned systems on land, water, and in the air, thanks to industrial enterprises, a significant port, and proximity to the Canadian border. „XPONENTIAL has always reflected where the autonomy industry actually stands“, says Tom Mitchell, CEO of MDNA. „In 2026, that picture is clear: the industry is moving beyond pilots and promises and into deployment. Bringing XPONENTIAL to Detroit underscores that autonomy is now about performance in real conditions, not just innovation.”

Following a successful 2025 premiere in Houston, there will also be a German Pavilion at XPONENTIAL in Detroit in 2026
The extensive program of XPONENTIAL 2026 focuses both on the exhibition hall and on numerous informational and discussion offerings on how robotics and unmanned systems can be deployed operationally at scale. Participants from about 60 different nations will have the opportunity to network, learn from each other, and initiate new developments together. Although recent efforts by the US administration to promote the domestic economy and limit market access for foreign providers have left their mark, interest in a presence in the attractive North American market remains high. As in Houston the previous year, there will also be a German Pavilion in 2026, and visitors from all over the world will come to the Huntington Place event center in Detroit. This is particularly relevant, as the Michigan Defense Expo (MDEX) will coincide with it and is a significant event for the international defense industry. Beyond the transition from single-unit to series production and from pilot projects to regular operations, the military use of unmanned systems is also a central theme at XPONENTIAL 2026.
