Unmanned systems have become indispensable to modern armed forces and are increasingly part of international procurement projects. For instance, the Greek Navy has ordered modern reconnaissance drones from the Austrian UAS manufacturer Schiebel to equip its new frigates being built by the French Naval Group. A preliminary test has now been successfully completed, confirming the operational readiness of the Camcopter S-100.

The state-of-the-art drones from Schiebel are primarily intended for deployment on the new Greek Belharra-class frigates (Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention, short FDI). As these ships are already factory-prepared for the integration of the Camcopter S-100, installation is fast and smooth. In addition to the drones intended for the FDI in helicopter configuration, a system will be permanently stationed on land to facilitate the training and education of the ship’s crews.

Real-Time transmission to the control station

The Camcopter S-100 from the Austrian manufacturer Schiebel has established itself as a reliable VTOL-capable UAS in both military and civilian sectors. With a range of up to 200 kilometers, the system operates independently of time of day and extreme weather conditions, both over land and over sea. The airframe, made of carbon fiber and titanium, allows for an altitude of up to 5,500 meters (18,000 feet). In the standard configuration, the helicopter drone can carry a payload of more than 30 kilograms for up to 10 hours while transmitting high-resolution imagery to the control station in real time.

The Camcopter from Schiebel has established itself as a benchmark in long-range maritime operations

For the specific needs of the Greek Navy, the drones will be equipped with advanced sensor technology, including a Wescam/L3Harris MX-10 EO/IR camera gimbal and an Overwatch Imaging PT-8/PT-8DN Oceanwatch system. This combination allows for a wide range of tasks, including maritime security, search and rescue operations (SAR), environmental monitoring, and anti-submarine warfare.
