XPONENTIAL Europe 2026: UAV DACH Precision Pilot Challenge brings live bridge inspection to Düsseldorf
How can buildings be inspected more quickly, safely and in a data-driven manner in the future? What role do drones play in the modernisation of critical infrastructure? XPONENTIAL Europe 2026 will provide answers to these questions with a new, high-profile competition format: the UAV DACH Precision Pilot Challenge 2026.
As part of Europe’s leading trade fair for autonomous systems, unmanned technologies and robotics (24 to 26 March 2026 in Düsseldorf), a section of the Theodor Heuss Bridge – built in 1957 and currently symbolic of the renovation needs of many infrastructure structures – will become a real-life test environment for professional UAV inspections. The challenge is being organised by UAV DACH e.V. – European Unmanned Aviation Association – in collaboration with Airteam and DroneMasters, bringing together industry expertise, practical know-how and the promotion of young talent on a central stage.
Live performance in front of an international audience of experts
The participating pilots will complete their mission live at the trade fair in front of a high-calibre audience of experts from industry, research, start-ups, public authorities and politics. Within a timeframe of 20 minutes, they will have to carry out a complete, structured and technically reliable inspection of a real bridge section.
The evaluation is based on four equally weighted main categories: flight precision, coverage of critical areas, data usability, and inspection logic and documentation.
The flight precision category assesses, among other things, how well the manual flight mode is mastered, whether clean image overlap is guaranteed and whether the camera work is stable. When it comes to covering critical areas, the focus is on whether central components such as substructures, pillars or transitions are systematically captured. Data usability, for example, assesses whether the collected data enables reliable 3D reconstruction and contains relevant detailed images. In the inspection logic and documentation category, the assessment examines whether potential weak points are identified and whether the results are structured in such a way that engineers can continue working immediately.
The focus is therefore not only on flying skills, but also on the concrete added value for practical applications: drones can replace scaffolding, reduce closure times and generate digital twins that support data-based maintenance planning.
Finale on the XPONENTIAL Europe stage
The live flights will take place on 24 and 25 March 2026 as part of XPONENTIAL Europe. The grand finale with the award ceremony will follow on 26 March 2026 on the main stage of the trade fair. There, the best pilot will be honoured as “UAV DACH Precision Pilot 2026”.
Interested pilots can apply by submitting their personal details such as name and place of residence, information on the licence class of their drone pilot’s licence, details of the type of drone used, including registration number, and information on their previous activities and experience as a drone pilot. The closing date for applications is 17 March
