DroneX Set to Showcase the Next Phase of Europe’s Autonomy Revolution

As autonomous systems become increasingly embedded across critical infrastructure, public services, defence and industry, the distinction between commercial and sovereign capability is rapidly disappearing. Technologies originally developed for infrastructure inspection, surveying, environmental monitoring and public safety are now supporting resilience, security and defence objectives, creating a new generation of dual-use autonomous systems. Against this backdrop DroneX 2026 is set to provide a snapshot of a sector transitioning from innovation and experimentation to deployment at operational scale.

Taking place at ExCeL London on 29-30 September, DroneX, part of the Uncrewed Tech Expo, will bring together operators, regulators, manufacturers, end users and technology providers from across the rapidly evolving autonomy ecosystem. A growing theme across all four sectors is the rise of dual-use technologies. Advances in autonomy, sensing, communications, AI and uncrewed platforms are increasingly supporting both commercial and public-sector missions, from infrastructure inspection and environmental monitoring through to emergency response, resilience and defence applications.

Defence is expected to be one of the most significant areas of focus at DroneX 2026, reflecting growing investment across the UK and Europe in ISR platforms, counter-UAS capabilities, autonomous systems, training technologies and wider sovereign capability programmes. The growing convergence between commercial innovation and defence requirements is becoming one of the defining characteristics of the global autonomy market, with many technologies now evolving simultaneously across civil, resilience and security applications.

The changing focus of the industry is reflected in the conversations taking place across Europe. While much of the past decade centred on proving that drones and autonomous systems could operate safely and effectively, attention is now shifting towards integration, scalability, connectivity, industrial capability and the delivery of real-world outcomes.

Adnan Hiroli, Managing Director of DroneX, believes the industry is entering a significant new phase: “The conversation has evolved considerably. As the UK’s trade association for the commercial drone sector, ARPAS-UK has witnessed first-hand how the market has matured.

Anne-Lise Scaillierez, CEO of ARPAS-UK, said: “For many years, the sector focused on demonstrating capability and establishing safe operational practices. Today, the challenge is increasingly about integration and scale. Organisations are looking at how autonomous systems can become part of everyday operations across infrastructure, utilities, public safety, logistics and environmental monitoring. That is an important indicator of industry maturity.”

A recurring theme expected to emerge at DroneX is the growing convergence of technologies that were once viewed separately. Aircraft platforms, communications networks, autonomy software, artificial intelligence, power systems and data services are increasingly being integrated into connected operational ecosystems.

According to Hiroli, collaboration across the wider ecosystem will be essential. “The next stage of growth will depend upon organisations working together. Success will come through collaboration between operators, manufacturers, regulators, communications providers, infrastructure owners and end users. Events such as DroneX provide an opportunity for those conversations to take place.”

Alongside growing commercial adoption, autonomous systems are also assuming a more prominent role in resilience, security and sovereign capability strategies throughout Europe. Investment in uncrewed technologies, digital infrastructure and autonomous operations continues to increase across both commercial and government sectors.

Scaillierez believes this has accelerated the importance of dual-use technologies: “One of the most important developments in recent years is the growing recognition that many autonomous technologies support both commercial and public-sector objectives. The same innovations improving infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring and emergency response are also contributing to wider resilience and national capability.” With thousands of attendees expected, DroneX 2026 will provide a platform for industry leaders to examine the technologies, partnerships and operational models shaping the next generation of autonomous systems.

As the autonomy sector continues its transition from isolated deployments to networked operations, the focus is becoming increasingly clear: not simply proving that autonomous systems can fly, drive or operate, but determining how they can be integrated into the services and infrastructure on which modern society depends.
