ERC-System’s new Victor heavy-lift drone addresses a critical capability gap in European defense logistics. With a payload of 250 kilograms and a range of 300 kilometers, the system bridges the gap between small drones and manned helicopters. Through its dual-use strategy and integration into ISO containers, the manufacturer aims to achieve rapid operational readiness in order to significantly increase the efficiency of autonomous supply chains.
No demand, no supply. At least not in the long run. Anyone who wants to establish a new product on the market must know what need it is intended to address. At ERC-System, the development of its own VTOL concept, “Charlie,” has deliberately focused on patient transport—and addresses “air taxi” ideas only marginally. With the heavy-lift drone “Victor,” the company is taking a similar approach—and addressing a current gap in military capabilities.
How can you succeed in capturing a market? Best by finding a market that can be won. When speaking with Maximilian Oligschläger, Chief Commercial Officer of ERC-System, it is ultimately this simple yet essential insight that perfectly describes the company’s strategic direction. While competitors such as Volocopter, Joby, and Ehang primarily aim to develop aircraft for regional transport, the team in Ottobrunn near Munich is also working on a manned VTOL. But unlike the competition, the company has chosen patient transport as a niche—one that
represents both a socially accepted use case and promises a business model that is significantly easier to implement than individual passenger transport. That said, this focus on the niche should not be confused with “understatement.” ERC-System’s goals are quite ambitious. The company aims to become the leading OEM for VTOLs in Europe, as Oligschläger sums it up almost casually.
