Wingtra presents SURVEY61 for precise terrain surveying without ground control points

Surveying without ground support

Wingtra has unveiled a new optical sensor as a payload for its WingtraRAY drone. What makes it special is that SURVEY61 is designed to enable the surveying of terrain sections and earthworks without GCPs (ground control points). And it can do so with an accuracy of 3 centimeters. Thanks to the significantly reduced amount of preparatory work required on site, Wingtra claims that a 50-hectare site can be surveyed in just 40 minutes instead of four hours.

Wingtra promises that its new SURVEY61 surveying sensor is a revolutionary payload on the market. Despite the absence of ground control points, it is said to enable reproducible results with an accuracy of up to 3 centimeters. For survey personnel, this means setting up ground control, preparing the drone, performing pre-flight checks, flying, and packing up. According to Wingtra, this allows for nearly 6.5 kilometers of linear distance to be captured per hour. This significantly reduces the time spent by survey personnel in the field.

    A head start through safety

The SURVEY61 sensor system, developed specifically for earthworks and topography applications, is designed to deliver high-precision results in conjunction with the WingtraRAY for more cost-effective planning and regular monitoring. In addition, according to the manufacturer, the drone is the only platform in its class with FAA approval for operation over people. This opens up access to around 90 percent of infrastructure projects – without the need for special permission. Compared to users of other systems, who can only fly to just under half of the planned locations, Wingtra customers have the advantage of being able to fly over active construction sites, highways, and urban areas without having to invest time in approval procedures – even BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) in the EU. This is made possible, among other things, by an integrated parachute that enables safe and compliant flights over areas that would otherwise be restricted due to safety risks or restrictions on flights over people.

In conjunction with the specialized Wingtra software environment, the company promises smooth and fast data collection over hundreds of acres within a few hours. Thanks to the sophisticated Wingtra ecosystem, however, the advantages do not end with data collection. Data delivery is also accelerated by reducing the time it takes to deliver results through synchronized workflows between the field and the office, with everything georeferenced and processed with just a few clicks.

    A new chapter

“The market needs a solution that is 100 percent dedicated to surveying and mapping,” emphasizes Julian Surber, Senior Product Manager at Wingtra. “With SURVEY61, field teams can reduce field time and ensure employee safety while obtaining survey-grade results more frequently across sites of any size. Working without GCPs is a whole new chapter for earthworks.”

Marcos Bayuelo, Senior Vice President of Product and Growth at Wingtra, adds: “Teams spend less time preparing sites and have more resources to focus on up-to-date and accurate views of their locations. We are confident that our customers who regularly perform earthworks will achieve more profitable planning, projects, and business overall with SURVEY61.”
