Propulsion Systems for Drones

Choosing the right propulsion system is crucial for the performance and operational scope of unmanned systems. Currently, electric motors dominate the market for drones, while internal combustion engines remain indispensable for missions requiring long range and extended flight times. At XPONENTIAL Europe 2026, manufacturers such as Hobbywing, Plettenberg, T-Motor, SkyPower, Hirth, and GreatPower Engines showcase what is currently technically possible with their advanced products.

Electric motors are considered the first choice for copters, especially for shorter missions lasting less than an hour. They are characterized by their ease of use. Brushless external-rotor motors are predominantly used, and are available in a wide range of sizes and power classes. In some cases, in-runner motors are also offered, such as those from Plettenberg. These offer the advantage of being dust- and water-resistant. In Plettenberg motors, the motor controls are also integrated directly into the drive unit.

For significantly longer operational times, which can sometimes exceed twelve hours, and thus much larger operational ranges, internal combustion engines are the preferred solution. Two-stroke engines have become the standard, particularly for small and medium-sized drone classes. Modern fuel injection systems and sensor technology enable simple, efficient, and reliable operation of these combustion engines. For larger UAV systems, propulsion systems from manned aviation are also used, in some cases even including turbines.

Propulsion systems directly influence the operational capabilities and cost-effectiveness of unmanned systems. Manufacturers and operators must carefully weigh the specific advantages and disadvantages of each propulsion type to find the optimal solution for their respective applications—whether for fast, precise inspections using electric motors or for extended surveillance and transport tasks using internal combustion engines. Understanding these technologies is crucial for further development and success in a dynamic market.
