European Drone Industry Agrees on Annual Production Target of 100,000 Units

The final day of XPONENTIAL Europe 2026 in Düsseldorf was marked by a groundbreaking initiative for the European drone industry. Yesterday, Wednesday, March 25, 2026, leading industry representatives gathered for a roundtable discussion to strengthen industrial production capacities. At the conclusion, the participants signed a joint memorandum of understanding setting the goal of producing more than 100,000 units of drones and drone defense systems annually by 2027.
The meeting was hosted and sponsored by Rear Admiral Christian Bock, head of the Bundeswehr Innovation Center in Erding. At his invitation, representatives from 25 companies came together, representing key segments of the European drone and drone defense industry’s value chain. Despite the current challenging economic situation, the drone industry is proving to be dynamic, with growing activity, stable demand, and high innovation potential. Drones are increasingly becoming an indispensable tool for security, infrastructure, the economy, and public services.
Discussions focused on operational challenges in establishing and expanding scalable production capacities in Europe. A central concern was the creation of framework conditions that enable companies to significantly expand their manufacturing while simultaneously ensuring technological sovereignty. A key focus was on strengthening European supply chains to reduce dependencies on international suppliers and increase the industry’s resilience. Secure active components such as processors, power electronics, antennas, transmission technology, and sensors like cameras are of particular importance, as they are essential for trustworthy and robust drone systems.
The European industry association UAV DACH is coordinating the participating companies. It will draft a coordinated report on the necessary measures to achieve the production goals as well as the required political framework conditions. The results are to be submitted to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Federal Ministry of Defense by January 2027. It is already becoming clear that reliable procurement decisions and predictable orders provide crucial impetus for building and securing industrial capacity in the long term.
This initiative marks a decisive step for the European drone industry. Setting a concrete production target of over 100,000 units per year by 2027 signals a strong commitment by industry and the Bundeswehr to strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty in this strategically important sector.
For companies in the drone sector, this means potential growth opportunities through the establishment of more robust European supply chains and the reduction of dependencies. The call for reliable procurement decisions and predictable orders could also create a more stable business foundation for manufacturers and suppliers and promote investment in research, development, and manufacturing in Europe.
