Volz Servos and Avilus team up for rotor control „Made in Germany“ cooperation for responsiveness and reliability

Wasps are amazing fliers: they can change direction in an instant, abruptly hover in the air, and then swerve backwards or sideways. The wasp is a mini helicopter with extremely high responsiveness, combined with endurance for long flights.

  • The UAV 'Wespe' (Wasp) from German drone specialist Avilus lives up to its name. The uncrewed helicopter can be used within land-based and off-shore logistic scenarios or for transport across naval platforms. Wespe is designed for such demanding conditions and requires agile, fast-responding steering mechanisms combined with the highest reliability. „We use the most powerful duplex actuators from Volz Servos to equip our systems safely and reliably”, says Avilus Head of Design Daniel Dollinger.

The actuators are installed for Wespe’s flight critical functions. At Volz, the fully redundant actuators have been developed for applications with the highest reliability demands. The actuator’s redundant two-channel design allows continuous operation even if one channel should fail. All major components, such as the electric motors, control and communication electronics, and power supply, are available twice; the position sensor features a three-channel design (for 2 out of 3 voting). Additionally, several sensors are integrated to provide diagnostic information, including current consumption, supply voltage levels, and temperature readings.

Volz actuators contribute to all Wespe flights being executed fully automatically, only requiring mission supervision. Without direct piloting, reliability is crucial as the helicopter must always respond fast and safely to guarantee operations at a range of up to 300 km.

„We are committed to the Made in Germany seal of quality“, adds Daniel Dollinger. „In Volz, we have found a trusted partner who speaks our language and understands our goals. We aim to further expand our cooperation with a view to additional platforms.“

„Volz and Avilus both produce „Made in Germany“, so this reflects the market trend towards secure, Western supply chains“, says Volz CEO Phillipp Volz. „Our cooperation is characterized by open technical feedback and direct communication between the technical management teams of both companies.
