Baden-Württemberg initiates the development of a national police drone

The police in Baden-Württemberg are striving for technological independence and are planning to develop their own drone platform. In view of the changed security situation, the project aims to reduce dependence on Chinese manufacturers. By linking research, industry and security agencies, a solution is being created that is specifically tailored to police requirements and could be used nationwide in the future.

Baden-Württemberg intends to develop its own drone for police tasks and to make this system available to other federal states in the future. As Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) explained before the start of the first drone innovation conference in Stuttgart, the state is confronted with a new security policy reality. Drones are no longer perceived as mere technological gadgets, but represent potential dangers from the air.

In order to fulfil its role as a pioneer in the protection and use of this technology, the state is focusing on increased networking. The Stuttgart Innovation Conference serves as a platform to bring together stakeholders from research, industry, security authorities, the military and civil protection. The aim of this cooperation is to create a police drone made in Baden-Württemberg.

Ending dependence on the Far East

Although the German police have been using unmanned aerial systems for reconnaissance, evidence collection and hazard prevention for years, the technology has so far been based largely on foreign manufacturers. In particular, the new initiative aims to end dependence on manufacturers from China. The Home Office emphasises that the cooperation between research, industry, the police and the armed forces should enable digital sovereignty that precisely meets the requirements of the authorities.

Technological development in this sector has advanced rapidly. In the coming years, drone technology is to be gradually optimised, with a focus on autonomous flight, battery life and the application of artificial intelligence. These efforts follow a decision by the Conference of Interior Ministers at the end of 2025, which envisages increased national development of police drones.

For the drone industry, this initiative represents a paradigm shift in the procurement strategy of public users. The focus is shifting away from low-cost imported solutions towards sovereign, domestically developed technology. This opens up long-term prospects and planning security for German manufacturers and research institutions for the development of specialised government systems. In addition, the initiative signals a professionalisation of the sector through the increased integration of artificial intelligence and autonomous flight functions. Companies active in these key technologies will find a concrete application market here. The demand for digital sovereignty could also serve as a blueprint for further government drone projects within the Federal Republic.
